On June 3rd, the Miss Universe Guam pageant took place with Shayna Jo Afaisen taking top honors.
However, at the end of the event, Alexandra Sanchez had been crowned Miss International Guam, and Katarina Martinez had been awarded the 1st runner-up sash. After the pageant, apparently there had been a mistake announcing the winners. During the post-pageant conference, Katarina Martinez was awarded the Miss International sash, while Alexandra Sanchez was reduced to 2nd runner-up.
Wrong girl: Sanchez (2nd left) thought she had won
The Miss Guam Universe Organization is issuing a public apology for the mishap that occurred during Friday night’s pageant. According to Spokesperson Pat Bamba, although the official tabulations from Ernst & Young were accurate, the announcement on stage and the sashes that were placed on the winners were inadvertently mixed-up.
“On the night of the pageant the sash and trophy team mistakenly placed the Miss Universe first runner-up sash on Katarina Martinez, and the announcers then announced Alexandria Sanchez as first runner-up to Miss Universe,” Bamba explained. “But the sash team that went out was the Miss International sash team and the put the sash and crown on Ms. Sanchez. Now, that was our mistake. There’s no excuses for it. That’s basically what happened.:
Bamba added, “During the mad dash to get the presenters our there to put the sash and crown the ladies there was that mix up and for some reason the announcers the proclaimed Ms. Sanchez Miss International, seeing the sash on Alex. You know, the Miss Universe Guam Committee, we take full responsibility for what happened and we apologize to both Ms. Sanchez, Alexandria and Ms. Martinez, Katarina and their supporters and their families. It was a terrible mistake and we regret that it happened.”
Instead of correcting it on stage, pageant organizers met with Martinez and Sanchez afterwards to notify them of the mistake.
As for the official results from Ernst & Young: winning the title of Miss Guam Universe 2011 is Shayna Jo Afaisen, Miss Guam Universe First Runner-Up is Alexandria Sanchez. Winning the title of Miss International Guam was Katarina Martinez, and Miss International Guam First Runner-Up being Meika Dunagan. Afaisen will head to brazil to compete in the Miss Universe Pageant, while Martinez will head to china to compete in the Miss International Pageant.

My opinion is that Miss Martinez should have won Miss Guam Universe so she could compete in Brazil…why are these young girls SO OUT OF SHAPE? If the girls from Guam truly want to have a chance at winning, there needs to be someone with past experience & intelligence to get these contestants conditioned (both physically, emotionally & mentally). I hate to see young ladies who simply are NOT prepared. When was the last time someone placed as high as the 1st Runner up Miss Universe-Patty Kerkos? See what qualities gave her the edge to compete in the International Miss Universe Pageant and do so well…Maybe ask Ms Kerkos to coach the girls for next year?! BTW, does anyone know where she is today and what she is doing now? Come on Guam deserves a legitimate shot at the title! Thanks.
This is a beauty pageant not a scholarship contest. That is why they called it “BEAUTY PAGEANT.” She’s not that beautiful! She will look like a midget with the other girls competing. Intelligence is something one can acquire and not someone born with. Her family has nothing to do with how she will do in Miss Universe 2011. She will be another Vanessa Torres and just be a background to all the girls competing! So sad for Guam once again. Sending an ugly girl to the most prestigous pageant.
Cool story, Bro.
Define beauty instead of superficial means.
Shayna Jo Afaisen deserves this title. She is highly intelligent by graduating top of her high school, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Biology, and is on the road to getting her masters and even attending med school in California. She is not only intelligent, but she was brought up by a loving family and good parents with values. Her family really value faith and humility. She is definitely a humble person with such compassion. I know for a fact because I used to work with her. She is a REAL role model because she has inspired me to go for any goals I want in life. So please have respect, there is nothing you can do about it. She has character, charity, beauty, self-purpose, intelligence, humility, compassion, and responsibility. I am more than happy to have her represent Guam this year.
Miss Universe Guam 2009 Racine Manley, Sierra Robertson, Naiomie Santos, and Katarina Martinez are wonderful representatives.
Naiomie Santos should be sent to Miss Universe — she is a quality candidate. I think that the island is too small for 3 pageants. There are about 20 girls running for each Miss Univers/International, Miss Earth and Miss World. Perhaps they should consolidate and have the best candidates selected on the same evening.
Katarina who is MISS INTERNATIONAL GUAM 2011 is in the same league as Naiomie Santos if not better!
look who is talking!
wow! are you guys more prettier than the four ladies? id ont think so…
Doesn’t matter who the winner is. All 4 are equally NOT at the world class level. Poor things. Guam sent a beautiful girl to Miss Earth last year. Should have sent HER to Miss Universe this year. She is in the same league as the rest of the MU candidates. Not these 4.
Shame on the Miss Universe Guam organization! Shayna Afaisen has been dating the pageant photographer Steven Hardy for months. He touch up her photos, posed her in traditional, elegant poses and the other contestants in unflattering and slutty poses (posting them on the internet), and allowed her access to all of the other candidates photos. Pageants have vendors and contestants sign contracts that include ethics/morale clauses. These contestants must have spend at least $1000 each on clothing, costumes, hair, and makeup. The people of Guam that attended paid hard earned money to attend the preliminaries and pageants. Shayna Afaisen should save face and step down and Steven Hardy should be banned from being the photographer for any Guam pageant!
There has to be prettier girls in guam..: )
Poor girls. What a mess!
