No more TV for Miss Switzerland

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss national television says it will stop showing the country’s “Miss Switzerland” beauty pageant because viewership has decreased.

The long-running show is a fixture of Swiss popular culture and winners are guaranteed lucrative advertising deals and society engagements for a year. Swiss television said Friday that its 25.7 percent audience share for the final was below what it would expect for a Saturday evening broadcast.

The network, which is funded through a compulsory household charge, axed broadcasts of the “Mister Switzerland” show in May, citing similar reasons.

Spokeswoman Manuela Kaech said the format “doesn’t fit our entertainment profile anymore.”

Sad….its always about ratings and numbers. Don’t even know why the networks around the world always do this. No worries Im sure they pageant will get picked up by someone else soon. Miss America here in the USA was on cable for a while until picked back up by primetime networks and now American audience’s love the pageant again, they made it shorter, funnier and more Glamour. :)

  • 25.7% was the rating for this year’s event? I know it’s Switzerland and everything, but by pageant standards those are great numbers these days. Even Miss USA and Miss America, with a potential viewing audience of 310 million, don’t even get that big of a draw.

I’m sure the Miss Switzerland Pageant will find a new TV station to televise it. I enjoyed the recent pageant, as it was webstreamed. The girls were lovely. Pageants are a business, and this pageant will definately be televised.

With the girls they elect it is not a suprise the viewership has decreased.

That’s not the reason actually. Viewership of pageants have been on the decline for the past couple of decades worldwide, with the exception of certain pageant fanatic countries, which oddly are some of the poorest countries.

I’m not surprised… The show is boring and they haven’t crowned any really stunning girl since Lauriane Gillieron.

Miss Switzerland will not disappear from television. Several private Swiss TV stations have already shown interest in taking over and televising the pageant next year. I am sure Miss Switzerland Org. will find a new TV partner.

these are hard times for most people around the world. People are worried about finding a job, and feeding their children. Beauty pageants, take a back seat when economic times are hard.

    Still I enjoy globalbeauties.com.

THIS WAS EXPECTED… EVERY YEAR THEY CAME UP WITH THE SAME CONTENT AND THE SAME STAGE!!! HOW CAN THEY USE THE SAME STAGE REPEATEDLY! LOL!… NOW MISS SWITZERLAND IS GOING TO END UP LIKE MISS ESPANA… To be held in a public square in downtown Bern/Zurich/Geneva…
