Official: Miss Universe 2012 to be held in Mid-December

Leila Lopes, from Angola, will reign for 15 months - the longest reign in MU history.

According to information posted by national directors (those in charge of organizing their countries’ preliminaries for the Miss Universe pageant) via twitter, they have been officially notified by the Miss Universe Organization that the 2012 edition of the contest will take place during mid-December. The official news, sent to the almost 90 directors worldwide,  state that the event has been postponed because in 2012, media in general will focus on the Summer Olympics (July/August) and the United States’ Presidential Election (October, November), so December is the date defined by NBC.

Confirmation on host country and an exact date will be announced shortly.

The Miss USA pageant will be held in Las Vegas on June 3rd. Both pageants will be televised live by american network NBC.

  1. Oh for Pete’s Sake..everyone will just deal with it. It makes sense that it will recieve more attention in Dec than earlier w/ the Presidential elections & Olympics. No one needs to rearrange their national schedules. Miss World has always been crowned in Dec. just before the year end…so what? And yes, the next Miss Universe will probably have a very SHORT reign of 6 or so months. So what?? I’m sure she’ll be HAPPY about that! So much drama over nothing, people. But, yes, we FANS have to WAIT..that’s the hard part!! :) But, that’s life.

  2. I think December is fine, Miss World used to be then, there are too many pageants in the last part of the year, if they can gradually get some in the first 3 months or so that would be good. Well done miss Universe org.

  3. I hope to be better television pageant production, better stage production and more exciting.
I can’t wait to watch my best beauty pageant!!!
    Good Luck Miss Universe!!!

I AM MORE EXCITED ON MISS UNIVERESE THAN THE SUMMER OLYMPICS… BESIDES, PHILIPPINES HAVE A LOT OF CHANCES TO BRING HOME THE CROWN THAN TO HAVE THAT ALOOF GOLD MEDAL TO OUR ATHLETE’S…

  5. In past editions, Miss Universe was not heavily promoted by nbc network. In fact, Telemundo network had more extensive coverage. I just think nbc are at a standstill, and don’t know what to do with the Miss Universe brand.

  6. LEILA HAS TO TAKE MORE ADVANTAGE TO THE MU ORGANIZATION!!! I HOPE SHE TAKES ADVANTAGE IN A GOOD WAY MODELING ADVERTISING, EVEN HOLLYWOOD!!!

    • She surely should!!!!

  7. omg !! THAT WILL BE MORE TENSION TO THE WORLD!!!!

    • You mean to say, as if the Mayan Calendar that ends on December 21, 2012, the Olympics, Presidential (who gives a crap) election, tensions in the Middle East were not enough and they have to wait til then?! Hehehe

  8. It’s time to make a Top 20, 12 and 6.

    • no way, I liked it MUCH better when it was 12 then 5 then the runner ups

  9. I don’t see why the pageant can’t be held in September.

  10. It’s really funny to have Miss Universe 2012 in December. Normally, Miss Universe was held somewhat during summer time and Miss World would be on December. This year, Miss World was held on August and Miss Universe delay till December.

  11. Lasallian beauty says:

So lucky for Ms. Leila Lopes that she would have the longest MU reign…..I cannot believe that the Ms. U this year would be on December. So whoever would be the 2012 Ms. Universe would have the shortest reign =(

  12. WHY NOT IN SPRING, LIKE BEFORE …IN MAY OR JUNE….DECEMBER IS TO LATE….ONCE AGAIN MISS WORLD START TO BE MORE STRONG THAN MISS UNIVERSE…THAT TERRIBLE

  13. I think it´s perfect. Leila should reign for 150 months.

  14. NBC is the one who dictates when the pageant will air, which MUO works around what is given to them. The directors can complain all they want but NBC decides and no complaining from a fan will change it as the pageant isn’t nearly as big of a ratings god compared to the olympics and the US elections

    • Francisco Lateriz says:

Yes, I perfectly agree with you. NBC is the official US network for 2012 Summer Olympics in London (not to mention the November Presidential Election that all the 3 US networks – NBC, ABC and CBS will cover it) so the preparation as well as the finances on the part of NBC would be a grave concern if Miss Universe 2012, 2012 Olympics and 2012 US Presidential Election are so close to one another. IT IS NBC now that calls the shots, not MUO or Donald Trump!

  15. This is the beginning of the end!

    • Be careful what you wish for! :)

  16. Why not like in 2008, it happen the same Olympics and US presidential election and they mede it in the same dates of every year. IT´S UNFAIR

  17. Just DO it in SEPTEMBER PERIOD and be done with it MUO! Can’t keep the fans waiting that long!

  18. warleyconcepcion says:

miss universe and miss world pageants simply interchange their pageant schedules.there should no big deal about it.

  19. Jid Martinez-Sierra says:

They should just cancel Miss Universe 2012 and let Leila keep the title for another year….December 2012 sounds just ridiculous and Miss Venezuela, SA, etc. would have been succeded also.

  20. Luis Alberto says:

  21. This is all crap. Like the MU fans aren’t gonna watch because of stupid american elections? Olympics is different. It lasts two weeks and is the centre of attention.
But the most important is the place. I hope Philippines gets to organise the next MU. The fans are crazy about it and they are going to make a great production. Singapore sounds amazing too.

  22. Miss Universe in December 2012, is a big misstep by the Org. This is going to upset some Miss Universe fans.

I long for the days when Miss Universe was always held in July.

    • I agree with you 100%! I long for seeing the girls in their bikinis because it’s summer….not bikinis in winter!!! Yikes! :))

    • I believe the beauty of life ȋ̝̊̅§ in change. We have seen MU held in may/july for so long. It isn’t bad to see a change in its date. Instead,it adds excitement to the whole thing. At least for the first time in a long while,MW wud be held b4 MU. The amount of time a titleholder reigns isn’t much of a big deal. Wats more important ȋ̝̊̅§ was she crowned? Did she finish her reign?

  23. I don’t know why they really have to push the event waaaaaaay back to December, Miss Universe has always been aired during May/June, only in the last couple of years was it aired later in the year. Besides, if Miss World is aired on August despite having the Olympics in July-August, why not Miss Universe, it can be in May/June like most of the time or September like last year. Either way, they have to have a venue pretty soon.

  24. also I think the winners from France, South Africa, Angola and those were crowned in December last year, may not be able to complete due to they may have already crowned their successors at that monent

    • The pageant directors should complain and say that it will ruin their schedules! Why bend on Donald Trump’s rules?! Without the pageant directors there won’t be any delegates. If theres no delegates, theres no pageant…end of story….Hello ‘MISS WORLD 2012!’ :))

  25. Olympic sports and US elections can’t stop pageant fans and mainstream media from following Miss Universe in 2012. The excuse they are using is ridiculous.

    • True but what if we expect don’t work out well, who will shoulder the blame?

We are all aware that the time frame is very long but what if the time is change to September and the pageant losses its media coverage right after the Summer Olympics and the pending US Presidential Election in October, who will be held responsible?

  26. I don’t like this, they have no idea how much I’m dying waiting for miss universe 2012. haha

    • I know what you feel honey!!! Damm Donald Trump! lol

  27. so the contestands can have time to get ready for the pageant, in that part that is OK but december is too late

  28. mistunivers35 says:

That means Miss Universe 2013 will have the shortest reign if the pageant is schedule during 2013 summer. Only 6 months…. Why not keeping a month, the same each year, like national pageants. For example, Miss France is always in december, Belgium in january, Russia in Mars, Canada in May…

And really being elected Miss 2012, in december 2012? ^^ SO STUPID.

    • Could never agree more with you!!! Miss Universe 2012 being elected in December 2012?! Like what CRAP!!! How ridiculous and pathetic can they get?!

    • Oooh…would love to see ‘RUSSIA in MARS’!!! :))

  29. The Summer Olympics is in July , August and the United States’ Presidential Election is in October, November… why not September for Miss Universe????

    • Exactly but they are right in some sense. In September the US Presidential Election will be in a heated mode and lot of media coverage will be focused on that. There won’t be much time to focus on a beauty pageant; Even MW 2012 happening in August in Mongolia won’t get that much media coverage.

      That is how I feel.

  30. Divalicious says:

    December???? Why so late?

So does this mean Leila Lopes will become the Miss Universe winner/titleholder with the longest period of reign?

And what will happen in Miss Universe 2013? Will it also follow the mid-December schedule religiously the way 2012 is?
