A ‘new world order’ in int’l pageants and two new rankings: see what’s new!

Everything in the world evolves, even beauty pageants (to a certain extent). New pageants with extravagant productions have come to life lately, but yet, they are still very far from stealing the spotlight from the two most outstanding and traditional contests: Miss World and Miss Universe.

After talking to pageant directors, experts in the area and beauty queens themselves, GlobalBeauties.com came to the (obvious) conclusion that the two greatest pageants, or the G2(Miss World and Miss Universe), as they shall be called from now on, cannot be placed on the same level of others, even if some of those, like Miss International, Miss Tourism Queen, Miss Supranational, and Miss Earth, are part of the Grand Slam (deservingly so), a concept brought to international pageants by GlobalBeauties.com over a decade ago.

To manage it in a fair way, we have decided to create two sub-categories within the Grand Slam:

- The G2, with Miss World and Miss Universe;

- And the Grand Prix, with Miss InternationalMiss Tourism Queen InternationalMiss Supranational, and Miss Earth.

Comparing international pageants to an airplane, we could say that Miss World and Miss Universe are on the 1st class; International, Tourism Queen, Supranational and Earth are on the Business class; and then, finally, come all the others in the Economy class (Premium, Flex, Promo, or Body-pass, or perhaps even on a bus, depending on the event…).

The Grand Prix pageants certainly deserve to be classified as Grand Slam competitions, however, it is undeniable that they fall into a lower category when compared to Miss World and Miss Universe, the two pageants which are most watched around the planet, have by far the most extensive media coverage, and have candidates who are the winners of the best national pageants around. That without speaking of over 6 decades of tradition and high popularity.

For example: was it fair to see countries like South Africa, Colombia, and Jamaica, which have historically sent very competitive candidates to Miss World and/or Miss Universe, which conversely, have been barely noticed in most other Grand Slam pageants, to fall behind in the ranking? We have arrived at the conclusion that countries’ performances and achievements in Miss World and Miss Universe can tell much more about the quality of candidates and national pageants than if all 6 put together, which ended up being deceiving.

Nonetheless, the other fours Grand Slam pageants also deserve to have their own ranking, after all, they are clearly above all others ‘traveling in the economy class’. So from now on, GlobalBeauties.com will publish and update two rankings: the G2 Ranking and the Grand Prix ranking.

All 6 will be put together only to determine the “Country of the Year”, with points earned in Miss World and Miss Universe being multiplied by two, as it has always been done.

Changes will put to effect starting now. A new point system has also been adopted, and you can learned more about it HERE.

Take a tour of the all revamped GRAND SLAM RANKINGS section.

  • Miss Panocha Internacional

    Hola Chulas adoradas hermosas.

    • Ed

GB Started the brand “Grandslam”, and the whole world owes it to them.

We all have disagreements with GB’s stances and choices sometime, which may differ to our beliefs. But at the end of the day, these are all made to entertain us – to do analysis, cast comments, critiques about the year in a pageant world, or so.

Pro or against our own choices, we must respect. This is GB’s way of interpreting it, their own way of gauging.

Bottomline, we are still entertained. We still seek for pageant infos, for expert and semi-expert’s opinion, and for trivia, and the like.

I still visit GB almost everyday. It is part of my routine, daily routine. Though sometimes they differ to my opinions, I still owe this website a lot. I may visit and post in other pageant websites, but I will still give due credits to GB.

Been commenting here for years, and the admin can see my IP address, and I have given much due respect to this website. I will continue to visit and support till lifetime.

GLOBALBEAUTIES SHOULD JUST SEPARATE THE RANKING IN MU AND MW. TO REALLY SHOW WHO PARTICIPATES WELL IN EACH PAGEANT. SPECIALLY IN MW WHEREIN ITS EARLY YEARS PARTICIPATED ONLY BY FEW AND ENGLAND AND OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES HAD BEEN FREQUENT WINNERS YEAR AFTER YEAR BECAUSE IT ORIGINATED IN ENGLAND. GOT MY POINT???

YOU SHOULD JUST SHOW RANKING OF EACH PAGEANT! THAT’S IT! NO MORE G2 AND GRAND PRIX. to really see who performs well in each pageant! YOU CANNOT COMBINE POINTS IN MU AND MW!

    • Ed

If you even bothered to check out the new ranking, we offer individual rankings for EACH pageant, as well as the combined ones.

  • priyank

its nice that miss universe and miss world are separated from others

but i still think that the ranking system of 2006 was the best one

  • JC

I am still glad to see the Philippines in the TOP 15 of the G2 Ranking. With 16 placements in MU and 13 in MW, the Philippines is still a force to reckon!

  • suzannah

I think this is a great idea, but I think Miss International should be out and Miss Intercontinental in, only because Miss International does not seem to value Black contestants and seem bias towards Asian and Latin ones. I’m not against Asians and Latin’s it just seems to me that such an old fashioned contest with such apparent bias should not be a Grand Prix one.

  • MOJO of the Philippines

First thing:Please forgive and be more understanding of the pageant followers from The Philippines, it actually requires psycho-social analysis to explain why many could be so crazy and the zeal is beyond normal. The country suffered much from the foreign intrusions: many years of Spanish rule which destroyed the beauty concept of brown skin and the small but well-defined nasal bone consideration as the Spanish rulers insisted on the mestiza as the beauty queen-worthy, the Americans introduced the Hollywood-look and the language preference (I want to see a Miss Philippines answering the final question in her language)and the Japanese sun-white preference – the distortion led to the endless battle of beauty insecurity that can really be an issue to cause anger and a Manny Pacquiao boxing punch. But the world of beauty pageant will never have the fiesta energy without our presence.
GLOBAL BEAUTIES as the portal to beauty pageant FYIs is doing a great job. It’s the first site I usually open to know the truth, sometimes the truth hurts but in the final evaluation, the GB standards bring up a country away from mediocrity. I actually love and very excited with the current developments in China and Indonesia, both are fast-growing in beauty pageant production.
The G2 glory for Miss World and Miss Universe is the right step to respecting the work of excellence. Please make another G2 page for the fashion model contests: Ford and Elite. So that other model searches like the Model of the World can also be in the Grand Prix.
G2 for Men: Manhunt and Mister World and the Grand Prix is only Mister International so far. Hoping for the Beach search and Mister Earth to grow better. Wishing for someone to create Man Universe and not Model Universe for a beauty pageant is defined so different from a Model Search.
muchas gracias! daghang salamat! THANK YOU and MORE POWER!
    Congratulations for being the QUEEN-of-all-beauty-sites!

    • GB

Thank you, MOJO! We are sure you represent the real spirit of most people in this great country which is the Philippines!

      • Rennelbludemon

Wow, Thanks GB for the compliment. Filipinos are not really harsh. In reality, we are very hospitable, we are always smiling, and we are kind with every people all around the world. In fact, we love tourists and other nationalities coming from another country. I can’t deny that somehow we are rude online especially in pageant websites like Global Beauties and others; because we can only show this attitude online and I also think it is because of our big love for pageantry. Also the reason why many of us Filipinos hate Miss World and even pushing up Miss Earth over Miss World because as you said we haven’t won our first Miss World crown. But overall we are nice people.

    • priyank

      hello mojo

      i m an indian

i truly respect u of ur views

each and every word in ur comment worths a million

i also support u on ur concept of G2 men’s ranking and men’s grand prix

i also expect global beauties will surely be “fairly” awarding the awards at the end of the year

and this time i hope all the awards will be clinched by asian beauties

      “salam namaste”

  • oh btw, I love your ranking system and you fully explained it well… you have a point… better and comprehensive ranking…

  • so sorry if I mean, arrogant and rude but that is just my opinion and observation… anyway Miss World is already an institution of its own and already produced beautiful winners past and present.

  • sorry but Miss World is Miss World no matter what and it doesn’t matter to me whether Philippines will NEVER win that Miss World. What I am only watching is Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth all three of those wherein the semifinalists who were the best on the preliminary competitions went on to compete for the finals night swimsuit and evening gown and the make or break final question and answer. I just love watching these three prestigious beauty pageants.

  • The final question in Miss World is boring it looks like the ladies only have to make an impromptu speaking not about what they have to say on a specific issue or pressing issues we are affecting today. The speech looks like rehearsed and there is an actual bet or favorite already chosen by Julia Morley way before the competition begin. One question that keeps me puzzling and doubtful of the credibility of Miss World? Why does the Morleys announce year after year the winner of Miss World if it is not the winner of their choice and liking? They could’ve watched the show far in the audience than announcing the winner which makes it more doubtful to think of Miss World credibility!

    • Ed

And that “uncredible” contest (as you call it) is the oldest and largest in the world. Just because you as a fan is not pleased with the results, does not mean everybody else isn’t. 130 countries competing, international media. Just because the Philippines has not won doesn’t mean the pageant is not fair. You people have to try harder.

  • There are also no evidence the “mock” judges are actually judging the contestants on the finals night as there are no clear and specific criteria of judging on the finals night are presented and that the contestants don’t compete on swimsuit and evening gown!

    • Ed

That happens in every pageant, not just Miss World. If you want evidence, you can call the Miss World offices in London, they will gladly put you in contact with the accounting firm so you can see the results for yourself.

  • jose

I aqm a big fan of miss universe and miss earth. the two most interesting pageants…

  • OlgaS

This is quite silly… you can’t compare Miss International to Miss TQI

    • Ed

Yes we can. Despite having a 52-year history, Miss International is still lacking in many important areas such as press coverage, pre-events and the show itself, before getting to China, was pretty stale. Hoping things will change this year in Okinawa. And most important: Miss International does not have a worldwide telecast. They post-produce a DVD that they send to directors months after the final.

  • B&G

I don’t know but everything was perfect with the existance of the Big 4 Grand Slam Peagent, year by year, each crowns has taken more importance in the national pegeants, as in Miss Venezuela they gave the 4 crowns, as in Panama this year, and in other countries such as Philippines, Ecuador, a many others. The problem was the you, GB, has ultimate the Big 4 into a Never-acepted Big 6 includding from notthing, Miss Tourism International and Miss Supra. I can’t never see Supra or TIntl in the same level as Earth or Intl, maybe Supra could reach the Big 5 in some years, but come on.. you are losing integrity in what you create. Everything was perfect with Big 4 and then you can have a Gran Prix Peagents and i will include Miss Intercontinental there.

    • Ed

There has never been a “Big 4″ in Global Beauties. Our system is called the “Grand Slam”. And Miss International and Earth were never at the same level as World and Universe. Also, when GB started, there were only three pageants. When WE (because it was GB) included Miss Earth, all you people complained. Yes, all of you. We were the only one who supported them back in 2002 when they were new. So it is only fair that you give chance to new pageants. For 14 years we’ve heard the SAME comment that “we’re losing credibility”, when today, we have the full respect of national directors and pageant organizers.

      • Rennelbludemon

I think I knew where those comments came from. I always believe in Globalbeauties. They always give us updates in any pageants. I also agree that the Grand Fix pageants are on the same level., they have their best parts and imperfections. As I said before, Miss Supranational is on top when it comes to TV Production, I don’t deny that, I love the whole show, the performances, and the stage. But when it comes to the reign of the queens, and pre pageant activities, MS for me is the weakest. It is the reverse scenario of Miss Earth. When it comes to TV production, Miss Earth has a long long way to run, it needs to improve a lot and it should avoid copying Miss Universe. But when it comes to the reign and pre pageant activities, we cannot deny the fact that Miss Earth is on top among the GrandFix pageants.

Overall, GB has made a good move in this one; seperating the MW and MU among the other four. BRAVO!!

        • Ed

Thank you for your comment, Rennel. While most fans and websites praise everything and see everything perfect, GB always go the extra mile and leave room for improvement. If we see a decrease in the quality of a good show, we say it. If we see an improvement, we say it. A pageant is not on the Grand Slam only on “tv show”. There’s a whole involved. Public relations, media, pre-activities, director relations, the investment it does.

  • Richard

I think it also works with two separate ranking sub-categories. However, Big-6 should be put together as previous ranking to give an overall picture of beauty quality of nations. By the way, many beauties who were not accepted by one of Big6, but they were deservingly recognized by the others of Big6. Thus, that does not totally mean that MI or ME are extremely dominated by MW or MU. Moreover, beauty is complicated concept which including many inside traits: culture, politics, luckiness…Therefore it should be like that:
MU and MW: their scores should be multiplied by 3 for their honorable positions.
MI and ME: their scores should be multiplied by 2
MS and MTQI: their scores should be multiplied by 1.

  • Ben

There used to be a Country of the Year link where we could see the top 3 countries each year since the 50′s; has it been removed?.

  • Edison

If Miss World had Top… 45 semi-finalist, GB would change the ranking again.

  • i like the G2 idea! yes, MU and MW cannot be compared to other pageants. I think Miss International will be the mother of pageants in the Grand Prix category.

  • Paris

Yeah!!! I like this, GB you always keep if fresh, 100% and classy…

  • keen

    such a great idea! :-)

  • bryan Peter

I still don’t understand why MTQI and Supra made to it to this list? I wonder why?

    • GB

Then we ask you, why should Miss Earth be up there? What is that you do not understand? Both are great events and certainly deserve to be there.

      • Rennelbludemon

When it comes to the cause, Miss Earth is one of the kind. Also the candidates are enjoying the trips and activities, especially the beach. It also cannot be denied that the candidates are having good times during their stays. But ME is poor when it comes to production. It has a dark stage, bad camera, and lousy production. Also, the overall show is similar to Miss Universe.; and it becomes bias with Filipino candidates. In terms of TV production, it is the weakest among the six pageants; but when it comes to the reign of the queens, it is third after MU and MW; the reigning ME is touring to other countries promoting and doing environmental activities; crowning girls, etc.. where are the queens of MI, MS and MTQI? Are they working? Miss Earth has positive and negative aspects. and I believe it has room for productions.

        • bichi

          Very well said Rennelbludemon!!!!
Now GB would you like to comment on that?
The mere fact that many countries crown a Miss Earth candidate proves that they recognized it as one of the biggest beauty pageant in the world. Unlike supra and MTQI wherein ALMOST all of the candidates are handpicked or runners up. Even Venezuela recognized ME as big 4! They have MV Universe, MV World, MV International and MV Earth…do they have MV Supra or MV MTQI NO!!!! India, Czech Rep, Panama etc crown a Miss Earth winner….again they DONT crown Supra or MTQI

          G2: UNIVERSE AND WORLD
          GRAND PRIX: INTERNATIONAL AND EARTH
ECONOMY: SUPRATIONAL AND MTQI THATS WHERE THEY BELONG!!!!!
GREAT IN TERMS OF PRODUCTION EVENTS BUT STILL IRRELEVANT

          • Ed

Miss Earth is 11 years old. That is why some countries crown a Miss Earth candidate. How do you think it was when Miss Earth started? or during their first years? A bunch of handpicked, runner-ups and women who were not even from the country they were representing. Panama does crown a Miss Supranational winner since last year.

Point in case, neither MI or ME are at the same level as MW or MU. Hence the change.

You wanted your answer, there you have it. And you should done some research and inform yourself before exposing your point of view in such classless manner, which is what happened in this case.

        • SS

Well Miss Earth-11 has had 1 travel so far, everything she is doing is in Ecuador (hometown) they on charge of ME tweet & ME Facebook (in Miss Earth Ecuador) and all environmental promotion is done over there. Miss Int-11 now is in Japan, she was in Okinawa last weekend and she is in Tokyo now. She will do son activities with Unicef in Asia and she has already done some in America. The issue here is publicity. My friends and I wrote a lot of e-mails to Miss Int Org to make them to post photos of Miss Int-11 (they are doing something). This 2 winners (ME&MI) are from Ecuador but Miss Earth Ecuador works harder than Miss Ecu Org on charge of MU-MW & MI and this MEcuOrg like much people pay only attention to MU. So Miss Int-11 have to work sometimes alone, she needs a bridge on the Pacific Ocean. Again, she works but there is not publicity!

        • John

True, but the candidates also have great times at many other contests, from smaller ones like Miss Tourism International to bigger ones like Miss TQI — which in fact, is second only to Miss World in terms of its pre-pageant activities. Miss Supranational on the other hand, while it doesn’t have great pre-pageant activities, has an amazing finale, better than MU even. So in some way or the other, these 4 contests are all the same. And as they get a few more years under the belt, the national contests will also start crowning winners for them – already Ceska Miss sends a RU to Miss Supranational, as does France, and other contests like Miss Poland, Belarus etc. also do the same. The point is, these four contests (Earth, International, TQI and Supranational) are more or less in the same league, each with their pluses and minuses, exactly like MW and MU. No one is saying they are bad, just that they have a long way to go before they can truly be talked about as being in the same league as MW and MU in terms of reach, prestige, history and career opportunities.

  • Francois

For me, this is a fair decision. Rather than totally eliminating one. Smart move and once again, another nice job by GB.

    QUESTION:
What happens now to the previous points/ranking earned by each country? Are those going to be re-calculated, and then, added to G2 and Grand Prix?
Or the score starts from scratch all over again?

  • roseby

I agree with the opinion of Pedro Chadid, Miss World as G!! The amount of time and preparation put into it during the course of the competition, the varied activities the contestants have to go through, the exposure in a tasteful manner, etc. is no by means easy to hurdle and to handle by faint hearted contestants or NDS.

  • tom

great.. Polsih site Globmiss supports these changes as well

  • John

A great move. I have been saying this for a long time…..the big 2 deserve to stand alone, and the other pageants, while great, and coming up strongly, are just not in their class.

  • Enrique

Excellent idea, i’ve always wondered why they mixed all these pageants in one all ranking basis when there are girls that wouldnt dream of going to the other pageants (the b list) MU and MW stand on a different level.I also feel that Miss Universe dosent have a country confirmed and its becuase is a very expensive pageant, stakes are higher, theres more quality and better coverage,Miss World is not a very expensive pageant to own, there more accesible when it comes to franchising but excellent venues.

    • GB

Thank your for your comment, Enrique! About Miss World, it is by no means cheaper than Miss Universe, on the contrary, more countries and more time require a higher investment. The difference is that Miss World is open to more participants, is more popular in most regions other than the Americas, and MOSTLY, it respects the local time. Miss World would never force a country to have its live telecast starting at 3 AM (like it happened in Cyprus, in Miss Universe 2000) or at breakfast time (Asian countries). That’s the main difference.

      • Miss No

Thanks for the infos bec. other people are spreading lies.

      • Tobaco

        Dear friends,

I believe that all of you know very well , about the two most premium beauty pageant : Miss Universe and Miss World.

Both of them have the strong points and weak points, such as:

MU is considering more exciting, interesting, … and MU is fairer than MW when top 15 is competing one by one until the winner is crowned, meanwhile, MW is usually chosen by Julia, the chairman of the judges, etc…

MW has more activities for all contestants from the starting date, accept more territories like Taiwan (Republic of China), Hongkong, Scotland,… But today Miss Universe is not !

xxxxxx Overall, they deserved the two most Grand Slam of Grand Slam Pageant xxxxxxx

        • GB

There is no evidence that JM picks the winner. The MUO is the one which makes it clear that 6 of 15 semi-finalists are picked by Donald Trump and crew, and not by the judges, as it is the case in Miss World.

        • John

It is not that MU does not accept territories — they still do (Aruba, Curacao, PR, Guam, USVI etc.), it is just that many of the others do not want to go to MU anymore or have yet to receive the franchise approval. MUO has controlled their numbers more tightly because of cost/logistics but they are also starting to change that.

  • Pedro Chadid

Congratulations friends of Globalbeauties! Such a nice new top! But I need to said something about it:

I´m prefer de G1 Miss World!!! It is so far the bigest and importante beauty pageant of the entire world!

And will be nice to give some spot in the Grand Prix ranking for Miss Intercontinental… A really old beauty pageant with some important history and with a lot of beauty girls!!! HUGS!!!

    • geographer

I do appreciate your comment and opinion Pedro but for me, Miss Universe though outnumbered by Miss World is still the best pageant of the world… Just look at the quality of the contestant each year vs. Miss World… Besides, Miss Universe has a live and really interesting format unlike Miss World… In terms of politics, both played really well on it, but Miss World has more to it I have to say, just look at how China performs in Miss World because of the favor they’ve had given them… They should be in equal footing right here

      • Ed

Good opinion, geographer.. but if you look at how China performs in Miss World because of the “favor” then you should ask how the USA and Puerto Rico perform in Miss Universe because it’s an American pageant. Both pageants are good, both have their flaws, but the quality in both is practically the same. Most people tend to favor MU more because of the excess of photos that come out of it, while judging Miss World based only on a headshot and 1-2 events.

  • Ben

Sounds interesting!. I’m glad MU and MW will continue being recognized as the greatest events in the pageants world, it’s only fair!
