Miss Ireland Dethroned for being “too old”

Hughes (C) is dethroned; Maguire (L) takes her place

Irish media reported on May 1st that newly crowned Miss Ireland 2012, Marie Hughes, has been asked to step down due to being “too old”. According to organizers, Hughes would be outside the age limit to compete in the Miss World 2012 pageant to be held in Ordos, China, in August.

20-year old Miss Wright Venue, Rebecca Maguire, will replace Hughes as Miss Ireland and will travel to Inner Mongolia for the international competition.

Organizers did not disclose exactly if Hughes lied in her application. All media outlets reporting on the contest stated that she was 21-years old at the time of her victory. Miss World rules are that contestants must be between 16 and 24 years of age.

@bbk miss jamaica danielle crosskill was not 26 last year!!! was 25 when she was crowned

I maybe caught flat footed with my first statement, it was also written on that page that the Miss World DR organizers were the source of information that Miss World Org. made an exception for their representatives age.

According to page of Miss World DR here in Global beauties, the Miss World Organizers made an exception that the Dominican beauty can still compete in spite and despite of her age. Ms. Hughes should seek legal assistance about this matter so she could get her crown back. No matter how beautiful her runners-up are, she’s still the rightful winner on the night of that pageant.

This is really old fashioned!!! Why is there an age limit at all? It is so dumb of MW, MU and the others. A beautiful woman who is over 18 should be allowed to compete no matter how old she is. It doesn’t matter if she’s 45 or 80. It would make the pageant more interesting.

They should also allow married women and mothers to compete. Again, how does that make somebody ineligible for a beauty contest?

Cant people here understand what they read? the article says that the actual age is 16 to 24 to participate and that organizers suspect she lied on her application about her real age, so that means they believed she is older than 24!! gosh ! ! ! !

I think any of the runner-ups could be front runners in Universe or World. They are truly breath taking

  • suzannah

I think this is awful. urely they did not have to dethrone her. Could not the 1st runner up be called Miss World Ireland and be sent to MW and the winner go to another international contest where she does fit the age range. Badly done Ireland.

  • rania

If she is 21 then she fits the age requirements Miss World age requirements are 17 and under 25

Good decision taken up by the Irish beauty org. The 1st runner up is a real MW type & exactly a true irish beauty just like Holly Carpenter, Rozanna Purcell, Rosana Davisson & many other hotties. I do also agree with others that the 2nd runnerup should go to MU bcoz she is hot, bold, sexy, bubbly & exactly MU material. If Ireland does send her for MU can never say she might win the title or place somewhere in the top 3. I do hope the org does think about this. Until then i’m happy with their MW delegate.

Miss Jamaica was 26 last year. They need to set the rrules straight both on the national and international level. this is a shame.

  • goofus

only age between 16-24 allow to compete? are we still in the 80s?

  • dkfan

the big question here is how this girl have beaten the runners up which are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY all the universe way betetr than the winner….

  • Soraya

Miss Ireland seems to have lost its way since Rosanna Davison won- surprising really as Irish girls have that fresh, natural look you don’t get in English girls these days. BTW, I do think the first runner up is prettier

    • John

I think they have had some good winners, including the gorgeus Aoife Cogan a few years back and the last two winners — Emma Waldron and Holly Carpenter – the latter (her placement notwithstanding) is every bit as beautiful as Rosanna Davison.
This year is a bit of a misstep, I agree….but hopefully, they will be back in the saddle soon!

Rebecca Maguire is Irish!!! Hence her name and Irish passport!!!duhhh!

  • koko

Who cares. I’m more concerned about how and when we can get the 2nd runner-up to go to Miss Universe!

    • Ian

Well she’d have to enter Miss Universe Ireland, which is a different pageant from Miss Ireland.
I’m sure Kate McAuley will have to finish her reign as Miss Derry though, so maybe you’ll get your wish in 2013 :)

  • PPETE

The second runner up is 20000% more beautiful!!!

  • JEAN

    this is only sad

  • Question

Then Why is 27 year old Miss DOminican Republic World,Jenny Blanco, allowed to compete?

  • Abi

How come Miss Dominican Republic has not yet been dethroned and she is THREE YEARS too old?

    • John

Miss DR is a different story…she was appointed by the organization so there is no question of her being dethroned. However, she has not been accepted as a delegate as yet by MWO. So we will have to see what happens there. MWO does make exceptions and there have been instances (eg Venezuela) where the national orgs are able to “manufacture” a new birth certificate/passport to satisfy the official requirements.

I want the girl on the right side to participate in Miss Universe 2012 … she would be a great favorite

  • Ian

    Is this actually true ?
The age limit for Miss Ireland is 17 – 24. How is she too old ?
Rebecca Maguire is actually in the left of the photo.
