THE 1950'S

And the Grand Slam Ranking in the 1950's continues...

1956

United States 279.00

8
Venezuela 82.00
9
Mexico 81.00
10
Brazil 80.00

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

GERMANY and UNITED STATES (tie)

What an interesting year 1956 was: the United States won Miss Universe and was second at Miss World; Germany, on the other hand, won Miss World and was second at Miss Universe! It is just fair that both country tied as "Countries of the Year". The top 5 remained unchanged, and newcomers in the top 10 were Denmark, who once again did well in Miss World, Venezuela, mostly thanks to its Miss World victory one year earlier, and Brazil, who had placed in Miss Universe for the third time in a row. The United States became the Grand Slam Ranking's new leader.

1957

8

9

10
Peru 103.00

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

JAPAN

In a weak year for the "powerhouses" of then (especially the United States, who did not place in Miss World and was disqualified from Miss Universe), Japan needed just a Miss World runner-up and a Miss Universe semi-finalist to end the year as the first Asian nation named "Country of the Year". Finland's Miss World victory brought it back to the top 10 in 9th place and Peru, now with a Miss Universe, appeared in 10th place.

1958

1
Sweden 352.00
2
Germany 343.00
3
United States 336.00
4

7
Denmark 178.00
8

9
Peru 124.00
10
South Africa 123.00

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

BRAZIL

Brazil participated in Miss World for the first time in 1958 and placed among the semifinalists. In Miss Universe, Brazil nearly captured the crown, finishing in 2nd place for the second consecutive time. Both results combined made Brazil the first "Country of the Year" from Latin America. Back to the Grand Slam Ranking, Sweden returned to the top, very close to Germany and the United States. Which country would be named COUNTRY OF THE DECADE in the following year??

1959

1
Germany 389.00
2
Sweden 373.00
3
United States 372.00
4
Greece 276.00
5
France 275.00
6
Japan 216.00
7
Brazil 211.00
8
Denmark 210.00
9
Israel 169.00
9
Peru 168.00

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

ISRAEL

And it was Germany, or the new post-war Western Germany, who after a fierce dispute with Sweden and the United States ended the 1950's as #1 in the Grand Slam Ranking of Beauty Pageants. The top 5 remained unchanged for the last six years of the decade, with Greece and France fighting for 4th and 5th places (Greece ended the 50's in 4th place, one point ahead of France). Japan, Brazil, Denmark and Israel (Country of the Year) kept on showing consistency in getting positive results. Unfortunately black beauties were completely ignored in beauty pageants of the 1950's, something that would start changing in the next decade.
