THE 1960'S

In 1960 a tradition was born when Miss International was created in Long Beach, the old house of Miss Universe. The Universal pageant moved to Miami Beach, where it remained until 1971. Miss World kept on growing in importance and number of participant countries. A major breakthrough happened in 1963, when Jamaica's Carol Joan Crawford became to first black woman to be crowned Miss World. Beauty diversity was celebrated in the two other grand slam pageants as well, as Miss Thailand and Miss Philippines became Miss Universe in 1965 and 1969, respectively. A Filipino beauty emerged as the winner in Miss International as well, in 1964. India had its first Miss World, back in 1966. Racism finally started being left behind in pageants, but stylish blondes and brunettes from the USA, Brazil, Israel and Scandinavian remained very popular in pageants in the unforgettable 1960's.

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

UNITED STATES
In a good year for South American beauties, Miss Colombia became the first Miss International ever, while Miss Argentina was crowned Miss World, in London. Meanwhile, an American beauty won the Miss Universe title for the 3rd year in just 9 years. The USA's good performance in all three pageants put it back on the top of the grand slam ranking, and it was also named "Country of the Year". The top 5 remained unchanged, but now with Japan, Brazil and Israel considerably closer to Greece and France.

Taiwan, or "Free China" came into the pageant scenario with full power in the early 1960's: after a second place in Miss World and placing in both Miss Universe and International in 1961, it was named "Country of the Year", tied with Germany, who finally won its first Miss Universe title that year.

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

FINLAND
Now having to defend points earned 10 years earlier, some countries felt the pressure and lost some very important positions in the ranking. It was the case of Greece (10th, previously 5th), and Sweden, who dropped from the "top 3" to a 7th position. Argentina, with a Miss Universe and a vice-Miss International, entered the top 10, in 8th place. However, Finland's consistency in the three grand slam pageants assured its first position in the year.

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

USA
Half a decade had been concluded with the United States of America being named "Country of the Year" for a record 4th time and leading the ranking comfortably.
