THE 1970'S
During this decade, hippy beauty ruled. That meant makeup that was as natural looking as possible and long, silky hair. Such rules reflect in pageantry, and beauty queens never looked as natural as they did in the 1970's (with few exceptions). Feminism gained ground, and so did protests against beauty pageants. Nevertheless, the show went on, and the USA remained dominant in the international scenario throughout the whole decade, while Australia emerged as a beauty power. It was a great decade for Israel, Brazil, Finland and the Philippines as well, and Venezuela, although still shy, started what would be an incredible ride as an international beauty pageant force.

AUSTRALIA
With runner-ups in both Miss Universe and Miss International, and a Miss World semi-finalist, Australia was the country of the year and started being noticed. 1970 marked victories for two pageant-crazy countries (actually one country and one territory): Puerto Rico (Universe) and Philippines (International). The small Caribbean island-nation of Grenada had a Miss World and its only placement in a grand slam pageant ever.

BRAZIL
With a Miss World victory and a Miss Universe runner-up, Brazil not only was the best performer in 1971, as it also reclaimed second place in the G.S. ranking, only behind the United States. Two "underdogs" won the other two countries: New Zealand had Miss International and Lebanon was crowned Miss Universe wearing hot pants! Australia kept on raising and jumped into the ranking's top 10 for the first time.

For the 5th time the United States of America was the country of the year after winning Miss International and getting positive results in Miss World and Miss Universe. Australia moved up 1 notch and occupied the 5th position, Japan returned to the top 10 and Norway made it to this select group for the first time ever.
