THE 1980'S
Welcome to the 1980's, a decade which had very specific traces and entered pageant history as the "decade of the over". Never before (or after) beauty contestants wore so much make up and hair spray; evening gowns were very unique: full of details, exaggerated, shoulder pads were common. Everything was over, even the very bright and colorful production numers for Miss World and Miss Universe. In politics, it was the decade when the USSR relaxed rules and opened up to private enterprise. The Berlin wall came down and Eastern European countries had a view to the west. As a consequence, more countries from that region started participating in Grand Slam pageants, and Poland had its first Miss World in 1989. Overall, Venezuela gave the cards and set the rules in pageantry. Osmel Souza understood the 1980's like no one else, and this South American country conquered 2 Miss Universe, 2 Miss World and 1 Miss International crown. Miss World started the 1980's surrounded in controversies, as the German beauty who won the crown in 1980, lost it a few hours later. Miss Guam took over. Miss USA had its 5th Miss Universe after a 13-year drought. Costa Rica came out victorious in Miss International, which was the first Grand Slam title for a Central American nation in history. Our ranking's top 10 did not change much from 1979, but Brazil lost two positions (5th), while the United Kingdom and Spain went up (3rd and 4th, respectively).

VENEZUELA
1981 was a great year for Brazil and a fantastic year for Venezuela, named "Country of the Year". Venezuela actually won the two most valuable titles that there were, Miss Universe and Miss World. It jumped from #10 to #5 in the GS Ranking. Conversely, Finland and the Philippines left the top 10, giving place to Germany and Colombia. Australia won Miss International, and remained second in the ranking.

1982 was a year full of surprises: Canada won the Miss Universe title in Peru, leaving behind favorites such as South Africa and Brazil, and the Dominican Republic went all the way to unexpectedly conquer the Miss World crown. The U.S. won Miss International, and lead the ranking with nearly double the points of the United Kingdom, now second (Australia fell to 3rd place). Venezuela had a bad year, which was about to be rapidly recovered...

The blondes reigned in Miss Universe 1983, won by Miss New Zealand. In Miss World, another UK's victory left the British Isles still in 2nd place. Costa Rica did it again in Miss International. In our top 10, Colombia shared not only 5th place with Brazil, but also the South American leadership. The United States was the Country of the Year for the second time in a row.

With runner-ups in Miss International and Miss Universe and another Miss World victory, Venezuela jumped from 8th to 2nd place, where it would remain until reaching the top a few years later. Venezuela, with all justice, was named "Country of the Year".
