VENEZUELA
Apartheid would cost South Africa's participation in most beauty pageants until the end of it, in the 1990's. In the year South Africa was forced not to compete in Miss Universe, Zaire, a Central African nation with predominant black population, was the third most successful country of the year, staying behind only Venezuela and the United States. Ireland managed to enter the top 10 for the very first time!

Miss World discovered Hally Berry, the Miss United States would would 15 years later win an Oscar as "Best Actress". As a Miss World finalist, Hally added some important points for the USA, but Venezuela, who won the Miss Universe title for the third time, was once again "Country of the Year". Australia kept on losing ground, and was then 10th.

SOUTH KOREA
In the year when Seoul hosted the Olympic Games, Korean beauties did so well that South Korea was named "Country of the Year": 2nd place in Miss Universe, 2nd place in Miss World and a semi-finalist in Miss International. The fight for 1st place between the United Sates and Venezuela got even more exciting, and Austria and Iceland (who conquered its 2nd Miss World crowned in just 3 years) appeared in the top 10 for the first time, replacing Spain and Germany.

For the first time a Eastern European country won the Miss World title and was named "Country of the Year": Poland. Canada, whose contestant placed second in Miss World, finally entered the top 10, with some positive results accumulated in the decade. The United States ended the 1980's on the top, but the American leadership wouldn't last for long...
