THE 1990'S

The 1990's was the decade when the "iron curtain" widely opened and several former communist countries joined the world's major beauty pageants; South Africa returned to scene after some sort of "beauty embargo" in protest to Apartheid (which ended in the beginning of the decade); Miss World conquered Africa and Asia and had the greatest number of participant countries among the "big 3" and displayed some impressive productions (like 1998, in the Seychelles); Miss Universe recovered strength when Donal Trump became its co-owner; Miss International lost sponsors and international media interest; Venezuela overtook the United States as the world's number 1 pageant powerhouse, while India emerged with amazing power to conquer 5 Grand Slam titles in the decade.

Poland and the Netherlands advanced to the Top 5, and Iceland returned to the top 10 for a brief moment (10th place). Venezuela was the country of the year for the second time in a row. Russia won the Miss World title and started its climbing towards the Top 10.

Jamaica became the first Caribbean island-nation to reach the ranking's top 10 (10th place).
