COUNTRY OF THE YEAR:

VENEZUELA

The decade (and the millennium) ended with Venezuela comfortably leading the G.S. Ranking and India (who had the 1999 Miss World winner) taking over the United States' second position. The US, after failing to make the semi-finals in Miss International from 1991 to 1999, finished the 1990's in a position it did not find itself since 1959 (40 years). South Africa also went one more notch up (4th), pushing Colombia down to 5th. Historically speaking South Africa has only taken Miss World and Miss Universe seriously, it never paid much attention to Miss International or any of the other pageants which would soon join the Grand Slam. It's interesting to note that all 5 continents were represented in the G.S. Ranking's Top 10 when the last decade ended: Americas (Venezuela -1; USA -3; Colombia - 5; Mexico - 7), Asia (India - 2; Philippines - 9th), Africa (South Africa - 4), Europe (Spain - 6; Finland - 10) and Oceania (Australia -8).
