MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT COMES TO TANZANIA
Compass Communications Wins Miss Universe Tanzania License

For the first time in the fifty year history of the Miss Universe pageant, Tanzania will be represented.

Following a rigorous application process, Compass Communications, organisers of Beauty Queens of Tanzania that holds licenses to Miss Earth, Miss International and Miss Tourism Queen International, have been awarded the license to organise and manage the Miss Universe Tanzania franchise.

“This is really a dream come true for Beauty Queens of Tanzania (BQT),” said Maria Sarungi Tsehai, Director of Compass Communications and National Director of Beauty Queens of Tanzania. “The process of building the BQT pageant begun in 2002 with the acquisition of the licenses for Miss Tourism World, Model of the Universe and Miss Earth. The Miss Universe Tanzania pageant will be the main title to be won by any Tanzanian lady who meets the international standards. Runners up will represent Tanzania at other international beauty pageant s as well”

Girls who will vie for the crown of Miss Universe Tanzania will have to have the minimum height of 170 cm (5 ft 6 inches), minimum education level – O level, between the age of 18 to 25, to be single and unmarried, Tanzanian citizen (natural or acquired since 1st February 2007), proficient in English, highly attractive face, well proportioned body and a good stage presence. “We also envisage that Miss Universe Tanzania will have a hand in putting together her own charity programme for her one year reign that is directly linked to HIV/AIDS,” said Ms Sarungi. “Community work is a high priority for the pageant and the title holder is expected to invest and improve the lives of those who are in most need of her services.”

In this historic moment, Compass Communications is also providing a chance to aspiring contestants in selected upcountry cities to apply as well. Application forms can be filled and collected at selected points.

“The representative of any country at Miss Universe pageant is labelled as the “Most Beautiful Woman’ who can epitomize the beauty of our breathtaking country,” adds Ms Sarungi. “Compass Communications wants to ensure that our beautiful country, our beautiful multiethnic people are represented by the fairest of them at the international pageant in Mexico, we shall do so with the best interest at heart.”

Compass Communications has been able to gather through its beauty queens 14 awards and placements in international beauty pageants since 2002, making it the only beauty pageant organizer in East Africa with this amount of award in such a short time. Girls who have been trained and managed by Compass Communications includes Sophia Byanaku – Miss Tourism World Tanzania 2003 – Top 16 semi finalist, Joan Cassian – Miss Intercontinental Tanzania 2005 – Top 5 Best in Talent, Magreth Chacha – Miss International Tanzania 2005, Miss Tourism Queen International 2006 and Miss Bikini 2006/2007 – with 3 awards and a placement, Rehema Sudi – Miss Earth Tanzania 2005 – top 16 semifinalist, Tete Maria Mallya – Top Model of the World – 1st runner up, Jamilla Munisi – Miss Globe International 2006 – 2 awards and semi finalist, just to mention a few of the achievers of Beauty Queens of Tanzania.

“Our work has been recognized and appreciated by the government as well including National Arts Council – BASATA and Tanzania Tourist Board – TTB” Ms Sarungi added, emphasizing that Miss Universe Tanzania aims to improve Tanzania’s participation and standing in the beauty industry. “We would like to call on parents to give their daughters a chance to excel in their talent and to travel the world in order to promote Tanzanian women and our beautiful country.”

Concludes Ms Sarungi, “Our Miss Universe Tanzania will be chosen at the country final in Dar es Salaam in mid April so we encourage the beautiful young women of Tanzania out there to enter.”
