Tanzania to compete in Miss Universe pageant
for first time ever

UNIVERSE PAGEANT COMES TO TANZANIA
Compass Communications Wins Miss Universe Tanzania License
For
the first time in the fifty year history of the Miss
Universe pageant, Tanzania will be represented.
Following
a rigorous application process, Compass Communications,
organisers of Beauty Queens of Tanzania that holds licenses
to Miss Earth, Miss International and
Miss Tourism Queen International, have been
awarded the license to organise and manage the Miss
Universe Tanzania franchise.
“This
is really a dream come true for Beauty Queens of Tanzania
(BQT),” said Maria Sarungi Tsehai,
Director of Compass Communications and National Director
of Beauty Queens of Tanzania. “The process of
building the BQT pageant begun in 2002 with the acquisition
of the licenses for Miss Tourism World, Model of the
Universe and Miss Earth. The Miss Universe Tanzania
pageant will be the main title to be won by any Tanzanian
lady who meets the international standards. Runners
up will represent Tanzania at other international beauty
pageant s as well”
Girls
who will vie for the crown of Miss Universe Tanzania
will have to have the minimum height of 170 cm (5 ft
6 inches), minimum education level – O level,
between the age of 18 to 25, to be single and unmarried,
Tanzanian citizen (natural or acquired since 1st February
2007), proficient in English, highly attractive face,
well proportioned body and a good stage presence. Applicants
have to also submit their curriculum vitae (CV) and
2 photos – one passport size and one full size
photo.
Holder
of the Miss Universe Tanzania will be eligible to win
a one year contract with Compass Communications and
other attractive prizes that will be announced at a
later date. The 3 Runners up will win the opportunity
to represent Tanzania in other international beauty
pageants.
“We
also envisage that Miss Universe Tanzania will have
a hand in putting together her own charity programme
for her one year reign that is directly linked to HIV/AIDS,”
said Ms Sarungi. “Community work is a high priority
for the pageant and the title holder is expected to
invest and improve the lives of those who are in most
need of her services.”
In
this historic moment, Compass Communications is also
providing a chance to aspiring contestants in selected
upcountry cities to apply as well. Application forms
can be filled and collected at selected points.
“The
representative of any country at Miss Universe pageant
is labelled as the “Most Beautiful Woman’
who can epitomize the beauty of our breathtaking country,”
adds Ms Sarungi. “Compass Communications wants
to ensure that our beautiful country, our beautiful
multiethnic people are represented by the fairest of
them at the international pageant in Mexico, we shall
do so with the best interest at heart.”
Compass
Communications has been able to gather through its beauty
queens 14 awards and placements in international beauty
pageants since 2002, making it the only beauty pageant
organizer in East Africa with this amount of award in
such a short time. Girls who have been trained and managed
by Compass Communications includes Sophia Byanaku –
Miss Tourism World Tanzania 2003 – Top 16 semi
finalist, Joan Cassian – Miss Intercontinental
Tanzania 2005 – Top 5 Best in Talent, Magreth
Chacha – Miss International Tanzania 2005, Miss
Tourism Queen International 2006 and Miss Bikini 2006/2007
– with 3 awards and a placement, Rehema Sudi –
Miss Earth Tanzania 2005 – top 16 semifinalist,
Tete Maria Mallya – Top Model of the World –
1st runner up, Jamilla Munisi – Miss Globe International
2006 – 2 awards and semi finalist, just to mention
a few of the achievers of Beauty Queens of Tanzania.
“Our
work has been recognized and appreciated by the government
as well including National Arts Council – BASATA
and Tanzania Tourist Board – TTB” Ms Sarungi
added, emphasizing that Miss Universe Tanzania aims
to improve Tanzania’s participation and standing
in the beauty industry. “We would like to call
on parents to give their daughters a chance to excel
in their talent and to travel the world in order to
promote Tanzanian women and our beautiful country.”
Concludes
Ms Sarungi, “Our Miss Universe Tanzania will be
chosen at the country final in Dar es Salaam in mid
April so we encourage the beautiful young women of Tanzania
out there to enter.”
