A Plantation woman has won the crown of Miss Florida USA 2009.
Nineteen-year-old Anastagia Pierre will go on to represent the Sunshine State in the Miss USA competition in April 2009. Pierre is a student at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. She plans to become a certified physician assistant.
Pierre beat 48 contestants from across the state during the final competition Saturday in Broward County. The young women are judged in personality, swimsuit and evening gown categories.
The last time an African-American candidate won the Miss Florida USA pageant was in 1987,
when Cloe Cabrera achieve the state's best results in the history of Miss USA: 2nd place. Cloe was then crowned Miss World USA and participated in the Miss World pageant, in Malta and London. She did not place.
Miss Pierre will try to win the first Miss USA title for the Sunshine State.
Miss Florida USA 2008, Jessica Rafalowski, placed in the top 10 at the Miss USA Pageant in April.
