Miss Universe Australia

Sydney, AUSTRALIA - Laura Dundovic, a 21-year-old Psychology student from Sydney, was crowned Miss Universe Australia 2008 earlier tonight.

The 1st runner-up was Michelle McNamee (Queensland), while Lauren Gillis (New South Wales) finished the competition as 2nd runner-up.

Australia's The Daily Telegraph reported that the winner attributed her victory to her supportive family and boyfriend - who were all in the audience - and hard work.

"I have always worked hard at what I do and that probably paid off tonight," Dundovic told the Australian paper.

"It would be great to reach the success of my predecessors, but at the moment I am the over the moon to be here", said the new Australia beauty queen referring to Jennifer Hawkins' success (Jennifer won the Miss Universe title in 2004).

Laura will now get prepare to compete at Miss Universe 2008, in Vietnam, on July 14.

Special thanks to Michael Knittel and The Daily Telegraph
