Final Words on MTQI 2009…

New Queen: not many delegates congratulated Miss Russia on her victory.

New Queen: not many delegates congratulated Miss Russia on her victory.

* Russia won, GAME OVER. After participating in Miss International 2009 and not even placing among the semi-finalists, Ekaterina Grushanina made an extraordinary comeback and won the 2nd MTQI crown for her country in only three years.

* Russia’s victory was not an easy one. Miss Russia received the same number of votes as Miss Brazil, 6 each. All Russian votes came from the Chinese judges, while all Brazilian votes came from the foreign judges. Miss Guinea received 1 vote.

* The tie-break was in the hands of the president of the jury: a Chinese. The close relationship between the two countries might have been decisive.

* Miss Russia was not a popular choice among the contestants. Right after the announcement, most delegates ran to hug and congratulate Miss Brazil. Miss Venezuela stood on the edge of the runway and started screamming in Spanish: “What was it??? Brazil is our queen, you must be crazy!!”.

The runner-up: Brazil was "queen among the queens".

The runner-up: Brazil was "queen among the queens".

* Even most other Russian and former Soviet delegates approached Miss Brazil to tell her that she should have been the winner, and not Miss Russia. Miss Brazil took the result very gracefully: “I wanted to win, but it’s a big honor to be the 1st runner-up and a fantastic result for my country. I congratulate Miss Russia for her victory”.

* During the final event, Miss Sri Lanka, the talent competition winner, and Miss New Zealand, the runner-up, performed their numbers for the audience and the whole world. Miss Zimbabwe, thrid in the talent contest, did not perform, but instead, Miss Russia did, something that the organizers did not give any explanation for…

* Miss Guinea, who lives in the United States (she has dual citizenship) and was the first woman to represent this western African nation in a Grand Slam pageant, was very proud of her accomplishment: she was the 2nd runner-up.

* Another debutant, French Polynesia also reached the top 5, and the contestant from this Pacific arquipelago couldn’t be any prouder.

* As a matter of fact, Misses French Polynesia and Poland tied when the judges had to decide for the top 5. They then picked Miss French Polynesia to advance to the final round of competition.

* Another tie happenned when the Top 20 were picked. With Miss Internet and the 5 Continental Queens already included among the semi-finalists, 13 delegates had already been picked, while other 4 had the same scores, tied in 14th place. They were Misses Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, Estonia and Albania. A new round of voting took place, and Miss Canada remained in the competition.

Political choice: In the end, the Chinese decided for Russia over favorite Brazil

Political choice: In the end, the Chinese decided for Russia over favorite Brazil

* Also new in Grand Slam competitions, the special tourist regions of Altai (Russia), and Phuket (Thailand), landed in the semi-finals. Turkmenistan had its first ever Grand Slam semi-finalist as well.

* The final event of Miss Tourism Queen International 2009 lasted for 1.5 hour, and was very entertaining. The Chinese found a very unique and original formula, which seemed to please most people who watched it. What it still lacks is emotion to call the finalists and winners, for that, it’s still very ‘cold’ and raw. Overall, it was an excellent show, bringing Grand Slam pageants to a new level, without having to copy the Miss Universe or Miss World formulas.

* Unlike what happened in Miss Universe 2009, where most finalists and the winner were once again from Latin America, and no Asian beauty placed even among the semi-finalist, all continents were represented in MTQI’s final 5: Europe (Russia), Americas (Brazil), Africa (Guinea), Asia (China), and Oceania (French Polynesia).

* The runner-ups and continental queens of beauty were requested to stay for a week longer in China, visiting the cities where they had been to thank for their hospitality.

* The new MTQI won a USD 25,000 cash prize, a scholarship to study anywhere in China, and much more. She will be requested to live in China for at least 6 months during her year of reign.

Congratulations to Miss Russia, the new Miss Tourism Queen International!

Pre-judging night behind the scenes (by R. Aizenman)

Misses New Zealand and Dominican Republic wait for their turn to meet the judges.

Misses New Zealand and Dominican Republic wait for their turn to meet the judges.

Tension, anxiety, tears, and above all, HOPE. In groups of 9 or 10, the 97 delegates entered the pre-judging room knowing that their fate in Miss Tourism Queen 2009 depended on their performance at that moment. Months, even years of preparation, could be wasted in one wrong answer.

The tension was such, that it felt like it was possible to cut the air with a knife.

Wednesday night was with no doubt one of the most exciting and nerve wrecking times for the contestants.  The very much anticipated prejudging took place at the 14th floor of the hotel their are sataying at in the city of Zhengzhou.

The beauties were separated in groups by continents, and each group had a chance to meet the judges, who answered each delegate one question.  The results for this evening will dictate who will be the 20 semifinalists for the big final on Friday night.

It was very clear being in the waiting room to know which contestants had already went through the screening process and who were still waiting for their turn.  Most of the girls were very anxious before coming and each had to deal with the stress in her own way.

While some girls seemed a little worried about the questions they would be asked, others had other things going through their mind like Miss Estonia, who left her camera at the last hotel where they stayed  (she got it back!).

Miss Honduras main concern was giving a great performance, so people in Honduras  (where beauty pageants are very popular)  would be proud of her.

That was not exactly the same case for Miss England, who felt she is “pretty much on her own” since most people back home don’t follow the contest.

There were also some exceptions like Miss Costa Rica, who seemed extremely relaxed and Miss Montenegro who didn’t show any signs of stress or at least managed to hide them.

Miss Albania left the room in tears… She explained that she couldn’t answer in English and was asked to speak Albanian. It happens that there were no Albanian translators!

Some girls entered the room with full confidence, and left it with a question mark on their faces. Miss Dominican Republic, for instance, felt the judges didn’t give her as much attention as when other candidates spoke. “I don’t think I made it”, she said. Relax, Miss Dominican Republic! You never know what those judges may be really thinking.

Miss Ukraine had prepared an answer in English to talk about China, but instead, one of the judges asked her opinion about plastic surgeries in beauty pageants. She answered it in Russian (but with the help of an interpreter).

Even those who didn’t seem to care about the pageant in the last three weeks, showed that they do care, and more than even themselves could imagine.

Ah! Miss Estonia (remember her??), left the room dancing! She looked confident…

In two days a new Miss Tourism Queen will be chosen, and trust me, it won’t be an easy decision.

Good luck to all!

Q & A: See how Misses Bolivia and Sochi answered their questions

Lourdes Gutierrez asked Miss Bolivia….

“What is the most interesting about the pageant so far, and how is the food?”

Miss Bolivia answered…

Actually this is a completely different world… it is magical,  full of beautiful nature and culture… the infrastructure of the buildings and the houses, the Buddhist religion and its temples, and the people, for all the affection and care they have shown me every single minute.

The food is very different from ours, but it’s delicious!  In every meal they serve you 19 dishes from which you can pick what you like.  I have tasted things I never thought I would!  ha ha ha!

Everything is wonderful!   I enjoy to the fullest of every minute I’m here.  I share this moments with Miss Guatemala, Miss Colombia, Miss Venezuela, Miss Cuba, Miss Paraguay, Miss Brazil, Miss El Salvador and Miss Ecuador, an unforgettable group of “Latinas”!

Vince Terence asked Miss Sochi….

If you are on the judges sitting in front of this very prestigious stage, aside from your country, whom would you choose to wear the MTQI 2009 crown and why?”

Miss Sochi answered…

I would chose Miss Kyrgyzstan.  I like the fact that she is very feminine, she has beautiful hair and a great personality.”

Latest Tidbits from China!

Silvia Cornejo, MTQI'08, in Zhengzhou.

Silvia Cornejo, MTQI'08, in Zhengzhou.

- With just a few days left for Miss Tourism Queen’s final, the competition is now getting more intense, and tonight’s Continental Queens contest may be a thermometer for what will happen on August 28;

- Speaking of the final, 40 thousand people are expected to witness it, a record breaker for any Grand Slam pageant! The show will be spectacular, with many surprises.

- The preliminary competition, when the top 20 are chosen by the judges, will take place this Wednesday. The semi-finalists will only be announced on Friday night, during the final event’s telecast. Then 5 finalists will be selected, who will answer questions from the judges. After that, the runner-ups and winners will finally be announced.

- Indonesia is very well represented in this year’s pageant. Both Miss Indonesia and Miss Bali are not only beautiful, but also friendly and intelligent young women. Miss Indonesia is a teacher, while Miss Bali will be a doctor in less than two years!

- Sivia Cornejo, Miss Tourism Queen International 2008, and Justine Gabioza, Miss Tourism Queen International 2006, are already in China. They arrived last Monday. Silvia (photo) has had a wonderful year as Miss Tourism Queen, and she now host her own television program back in her native Peru.

- Miss Phuket certainly knows how to get the geral public and media attention! Her grandparents from her mother’s side are from China, so she speaks some Chinese and is always very nice and enthusiastic to everyone around her. Her wardrobe is one of the most impressive.

- The Asian delegates demonstrated total disappointment at this year’s Miss Universe results. It happens that no Asian beauties were included in Miss U’s top 15! They are hoping for a different turnout here…

- Some of the Latins girls have formed a very united and closed group. It even has a president (Miss Venezuela) and a vice-president (Miss Cuba), who decide who should and who should not be part of their “club”. Wouldn’t Chavez and Fidel be proud of these two??

- Another very closed and peculiar group is the so-called ‘Russian gang’, with most Russian states and former Soviet republics. They barely talk to contestants outside their own circle of friends, and are certainly not among the most congenial girls around. However, some of them are very beautiful and nice, and are among this year’s strongest competitors.

- When visiting the Shaolin Temple, one contestant simply refused to be photographed with a local man and his child. She said ‘no’ to the man and walked away. Misses India and Costa Rica saw what happened and promply offered to be photographed with them, which brought a smile back to the man’s face…

cr_in- Speaking of noble souls, Miss Estonia is not only incredibly beautiful, but also super nice and kind to everyone. She’s the kind of person you could spend hours talking about a variety of topics!

- Miss Guinea is the first ever representative of her country in a Grand Slam pageant. Back home she is a model, and many people believe she could do really well in the competition.

- Miss Swaziland was devastated and in tears when she found out about Miss Swaziland (World) 2008’s suicide. They were close friends.

Venezuela wins ‘Best in Evening Gown’ award

gown2

It was a night of elegance and glamour, in which the 97 MTQI’09 contestants paraded with their evening gowns on a impressive 30-m-long runway. In the end, it was Miss Venezuela and her stunning red and black gown who walked away with the crown and title ‘Best in Evening Gown 2009′.

Venezuela’s victory came a few hours after another Venezuelan was crowned Miss Universe 2009, in the Bahamas, and just like it happened there, it was a back-to-back victory for Venezuela in China as well: in 2008 Miss Venezuela also won the ‘Best in Gown’ competition in MTQI.

What a day for Venezuela!

The second best in evening gown was Miss China, and Miss Philippines came in third place.

Other great gowns and presentations belonged to Misses Romania, Brazil, Armenia, Trinidad & Tobago, Malaysia, Mongolia, Thailand, Guatemala, among others.

The new Miss Tourism Queen International will be crowned on August 28, in Zhengzhou.

Q & A: Contestants start answering questions from the fans

You sent your questions, here are some of their answers:

In which way has this experience changed the way you look at your own country?

Miss New Zealand answered….

“Dear J.P

Being in China has really made me realize how much I love New Zealand. Being so far away from my country has made me appreciate the small things that make New Zealand the home it is for me. Seeing some of the sites of China on this amazing trip has also made me see that although we are a small unique country far away, we do have similarities to other great touristic countries, such as China, that connect us with the rest of the world.”

Felino Morate asked Miss Korea….

“What would you tell a young lady who is suffering from low self-steem to feel better about herself?”

Miss Korea answered….

“Dear Felino:

There are many ways to improve your happiness in life and in my thought, the primary way is being a man or woman of great self respect.  With self-pride you can be more charming just by smiling often and read more books makes you smarter. Additionally, if you form a resolute plan of life you would be confident that your life is bigger than you know!”

Vince Terence asked Miss Martinique…

“If you are left with no choice but to lose one of your senses, what would it be and why?”

Miss Martinique answered….

“Dear Vince, if I had to eliminate one of my five senses I would choose the sense of smell because I can compensate this one with the sense of taste and I like my sweet life.  If I loose the sight, I loose the vision of my relationships and the world, then if I loose the hearing I loose the energy of the music and the sweetness of the words from different people all over the world.  And if I loose the touch, I can’t feel people.”
