MISS WORLD KENYA 2008 - Ruth Kinuthia

Inspired by her country's Track & Field athletes' incredible performance in Beijing, who won 5 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals for Kenya, the African nation to have won most medals in the recently concluded Olympic Games, Miss World Kenya 2008 Ruth Kinuthia is preparing to compete strongly in the 2008 Miss World competition. See what she has to say...

Describe yourself in one or two sentences.

I would describe myself as being a warm and friendly person, very ambitious, Outgoing, determined and focused.

Which three songs must be in your I-Pod?

- Imagine Me by Kirk Franklin
- Ordinary people by John Legend
- Video by India Arie.

Tell us about your “Beauty With a Purpose” Project.

One of my passions has always been to work with the youth in various primary and secondary schools in my country. Therefore, I work with a school in one of the slums in Nairobi; it is a school mainly for children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. I work together with the community to carry out various activities and raise funds for the sustenance of the school, as well as being a positive role model to the students.

What has been your most memorable rainy day?

I would have to say it was a day when a Gender Recovery Unit was being set up in one of the National hospitals in my home town and I was among the team organising the official launch of this unit. Although It was quite a challenge to put such an event together everything seemed to be going smoothly……… until the last minute when everything seemed to be falling apart!!!!! But at the end of the day we managed to pull it off, the event was a success and I learned to stay in control and keep my cool under pressure.

If you were invited to participate in the next NY Fashion Week, which fashion designer you would like to dress you?

I would love for Versace to dress me!!! She has totally taken the fashion industry by storm, her collections are strong woman inspired and at the same time classy and chic.

Tell us about the nightlife in your hometown.

The night life in Nairobi is very vibrant and it comes alive mostly during the weekend. We have a wide variety of clubs which cater for different clientele, ranging from Afro-fusion to hip hop, rock and live bands.

What has been your weirdest dream? Describe it.

Once, I dreamt that I was taking a walk through the park on a sunny afternoon and there were children playing all around. What was weird was that right in the middle of the park were an army of ants working to build a highway around the park and the children joined in to help the ants by picking flowers from all around the park and decorating the highway!!

Where will the Miss World judges score you highest: interview, swimsuit or gown presentation?

While I expect to score highly in all areas, I believe my strengths will be seen during the interviews as I get to interact with the judges.

What message you would like to send to the other Miss World contestants?

I know that preparing for the Miss World competition can be very challenging because you are not only representing yourself but your country. I would like to tell the other contestants to take on every challenge with a positive attitude and to work hard and stay focused.
