1977: ANALYSING THE MAIN CHANGES IN THE GRAND SLAM RANKING DURING THE PAST YEAR

  • Argentina, after a positive year, returned to the Top 10, in 10th place (+1). It replaced the Philippines, 11th (-1);

  • Spain, the best overall performer of the year, went three notches up, reaching the 16th place, its best historical mark that far;

  • Trinidad & Tobago was the biggest mover of the year upon winning the Miss Universe title. It went from 80th to 43rd place (+37);

  • Ever since Hawaii became an American state, it only competed internationally in Miss International. The 4th place in Japan, in 1977, allowed Hawaii to return to the Top 50, in 46th place (+8);

  • Scotland, 49th (+6), integrated the Top 50 for the first time;

  • Guam, Panama, Paraguay, and Tahiti, left the Top 50;

  • Indonesia placed in a Grand Slam contest for the first time, escalating impressive 24 notches in our ranking, going from 92nd to the 68th position.

Miss World Ranking in 1977 (Top 10): 1-UK; 2-United States; 3-Sweden; 4-South Africa; 5-France; 6-Germany; 7-Israel; 8-Australia; 9-Jamaica; 10-Finland.

Miss Universe Ranking in 1977 (Top 10): 1-United States; 2-Brazil; 3-Finland; 4-Sweden; 5-Israel; 6-Germany; 7-England / UK; 8-Japan; 9-Philippines; 10-Colombia.

Miss International Ranking in 1977 (Top 10): 1-United States; 2-England / UK; 3-Philippines; 4-Brazil; 5-Finland; 6-Australia; 7-Germany; 8-Iceland; 9-Argentina; 10-Spain.

COUNTRY OF THE YEAR 1977: IT´S SPAIN AND OLÉ!

The colorful and turbulent 1970s were walking to a closure, and in 1977 the most successful nation, for the first time, was Spain! Pilar Medina Canadell conquered the Miss International title, leaving in 2nd place the spectacular Dagmar Winkler of Germany, 2nd runner-up in Miss World, also that year. Spain´s Luz María Polegre was a semi-finalist in Miss Universe, and beautiful Guillermina Ruiz reached the Top 15 of Miss World. What a year for Spain!

With no winner, but scoring high with a 2nd place in Miss International, 3rd in Miss World, and 5th in Miss Universe, Germany came 2nd that year.

The third position went to Sweden, the winner of Miss World.

Trinidad & Tobago gave Miss Universe its first black winner, Janelle Commissiong, and place 4th.
